Oval Gear Meters

Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meters Offer Simplicity, High Performance, and Low Total Cost of Ownership

Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meters utilize positive displacement (PD) technology due to its elite performance across a wide range of fluid viscosities. Positive displacement technology affords low pressure loss across the meter chamber and minimum slippage, ultimately yielding a very high degree of accuracy and linearity over the life of the meter.

Although no flow meter is ideal for ALL operating conditions, Fill-Rite PD meters offer the following advantages:

  • No straight pipe requirements on the flow meter inlet and outlet
  • Weights and Measures Approved for custody-transfer in the US, Canada, EU, and Australia
  • Easily maintained over the life of the meter due to minimal moving parts
  • Excellent accuracy and linearity
  • Adaptable to a multitude of accessories like registers, strainers, and air eliminators
  • Required pump horsepower is lower than other meter technologies, resulting in lower initial system costs and long-term operating costs

Trusted Oval Gear Technology

Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meters are manufactured with oval gear technology because it is simple, yet highly effective for the following reasons:

HIGH ACCURACY: Oval gear flow meters are known for their high accuracy and repeatability. Oval gears rotate in a fixed position, ultimately creating a very precise and consistent fluid flow. This technology holds tight tolerances, so it can be used for Weights and Measures commercial applications and even for accurate measurement of small flows.

WIDE APPLICATION RANGE: The versatility of oval gear technology makes it suitable for measuring a wide range of viscosities. Our meters are compatible with fluids used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and petroleum industries.

FEWER PARTS, LESS MAINTENANCE: Oval gear flow meters have fewer moving parts than other technologies, leading to less maintenance throughout the life of the system. They are also less prone to clogging or other damage caused by particles in fluids. Should maintenance ever be needed, our simple and straightforward meter design allows for minimal downtime.

DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Our meter internals are manufactured from high-quality materials such as:

  • Oval Gears: Stainless steel and PPS
  • Bearings: Carbon or Teflon™
  • Seals: Viton™, Buna-N, or Teflon™

Together, the combination of these durable materials results in meters that can withstand high pressure and high temperature environments for a variety of different fluids.

INSTALLATION FLEXIBILITY: Our oval gear meters install quickly and easily and can be installed in both horizontal and vertical pipe applications. Additionally, they can be manufactured with NPT, BSP, or ANSI pipe flanges.

Not sure where to start? Check out our helpful Oval Gear Meters Question Guide! Click below to review some of the key questions you need to ask your customers when beginning the quoting process for their meter applications.

Identifying the System Application: Where will the Oval Gear Meter be used?

Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meters can be used in many different applications, each requiring different components. So it's helpful to start by identifying where it will be used. Here are some common Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meter applications, each with different component requirements:

  1. Filling tank trucks with one pump per flow meter, versus with one pump for multiple flow meters
  2. Filling tank trucks with top loading versus bottom loading
  3. Pumping out of underground storage tanks using a submersible pump, versus a suction pump
  4. Filling drums: Fueling passenger cars, trucks, locomotives, boats by an attendant, versus an unmanned installation
  5. Receiving fuel into storage from tank trucks:
    • Unloading with a truck mounted pump
    • Unloading with a stationary pump
    • Unloading via gravity into underground tanks

These examples illustrate the wide variety of applications that Fill-Rite Oval Gear Meters can be installed in. Whether you're quoting a meter yourself or working with a Fill-Rite resentative, identifying the application is the ideal place to start.

Defining the Operating Environment: How will the Oval Gear Meter be used, what will it be used for?

To identify the correct flow meter assembly, it is necessary to define the operating environment in which the meter will be used. Here we must define (1) what it will be used for and (2) how it will be used. There is not a generic flow meter that is suitable for uses on all liquids and in any system. For most applications, it is necessary to answer the following questions:

  1. What liquid is being metered?
  2. What are the operating conditions?
    • Maximum operating pressure?
    • Minimum and maximum flow rate?
    • Liquid viscosity over full temperature range?
    • Minimum and maximum operating temperature?
  3. What functions should the flow meter perform? Operating and output requirements are critical factors in system design that influence which accessories should be included in the flow meter assembly, such as:
    • Solenoid valve, 1 or 2-stage
    • Mechanical or electronic register
    • Preset (delivery volume selection)
    • Printer for written record of deliveries
    • Strainer (standard or high capacity)
    • Air Eliminator
    • Backpressure valve
    • Air Check valve
    • Mechanical control (preset) valve
  4. What registration/documentation should be performed?
  5. If electrical or electronic components are included, what classification must those components meet?
Communication with Other Equipment: What will the Oval Gear Meter be used with?

What communication, if any, is required with other equipment in the system? Examples include card readers, key-locks, printers, PLC's, or a local PC

General purpose flow meters for use on refined petroleum products typically consist of a flow meter with register (either mechanical or electronic), inlet strainer and air eliminator. Yet many flow meters contain additional components to deal with specific system and operational requirements. Fill-Rite distributors are always ready to assist with product selection!
